Why we need to write

“A poem cannot stop a bullet. A novel cannot defuse a bomb. But we are not helpless. We can sing the truth and name the liars.” ~Salman Rushdie

The mission of Sligo Creek Publishing is to give voice to those who believe in fundamental human rights, who understand that diversity is the font of creativity; above all, to those who celebrate the power of love.

We aspire to publish the ones who, in the spirit of Jack Kerouac’s vision, are “mad to live, mad to write,” mad to explore the boundless potential of stories. They are the storytellers who never settle for the commonplace, but instead burn, burn, burn with an insatiable hunger to share their truth.

At Sligo Creek Publishing, we celebrate the art and craft of writing in all its forms. We believe a great story is inherently poetic, and a great poem tells a story that resonates deeply. Both should paint vivid pictures and possess a musicality that is as powerful when read aloud as it is on the page.

Our focus also extends to the vibrant voices of the Washington, DC area—a region alive with passion, creativity, and stories waiting to be told.

What We Are About

Sligo Creek Publishing was founded by Alan Abrams, shortly before his 75th birthday, fueled by his frustration with the gatekeeping of powerhouse journals and submission platforms like Submittable. This press was created to provide a different path—a place where every submission receives the attention it deserves.

As a boutique publishing house, we keep our calls for submissions highly targeted and prioritize poets and writers from the DC metropolitan area. This region pulses with outstanding poetry and storytelling, both written and spoken, and Sligo Creek Publishing takes an active role in supporting this thriving literary scene. We’re proud to champion local voices and support independent bookstores and organizations such as Day Eight.

We aim to stay small but impactful, dedicated to curating and publishing exceptional works that set hearts and minds alight.

ABOUT ALAN ABRAMS

After leaving art school, Alan embarked on a cross-country journey, riding a cobbled-together BMW motorcycle and working in motorcycle shops and construction sites along the way. His career later evolved into building design, where he earned recognition as a Fellow of the American Institute of Building Design.

Now, Alan lives a quieter life in Silver Spring, Maryland, with Janet Kinzer, drawing inspiration from his experiences and the world around him.
